In 1997, grain production increased to amount 85 million tons. This corresponds to a yield of 19.9 quintals by hectare against 16.7 the previous year. Grain production amounts to only 53 million tons today. Since 1998, the agricultural production has been declining and the primary sector accounted for 6.5 % of the GDP in 1998.
