Finland Agriculture

Contents extracted from the comprehensive atlas of international trade by Export Entreprises
In Finland, the farming season is short: 160 to 180 days in the South and 110 to 145 days in the North. The respect of the environment is very important for the farming sector. Main cultures are : barley, oat, wheat, rye, sugar beet and potato. On the contrary, the Finnish fruits production is largely insufficient to satisfy the domestic demand. That is why, Finland imports a large quantity of fruits and more specially citrus fruits. Moreover, forestry has an important place in the Finnish farmer work. Indeed, a medium farm has 13.4 hectares of arable lands and 46.4 hectares of forest. The forest represents an important source of incomes and work for farmers over the winter. The Finnish agriculture, which was very protected, is now forced to open up to international competition. The country will be more dependent on community decisions.
